Utah Ski Areas Near Record Snowfalls

The ski season is over but the snow isn't. Local media are reporting one of the largest snow totals in history for this past winter- and more is on the way. It's been an ideal ski season and winter, especially for those of us who live here. Hard to believe that we're just a couple of weeks away from summer and 100-degree heat.

The Snow Keeps On Coming in Utah!

Another whopper is blasting most of Utah right now (check out the live cam). Another two feet of snow are possible in the ski areas. Solitude and Alta already have above their average yearly snow totals. I'm hitting the slopes tomorrow to take advantage of what may still not be the last powder day of this incredible season. April 13 is the scheduled closing date for most of the ski areas but I'd be surprised if any of them close before May. Temperatures are still cool and melting has been minimal. And yet another storm is probable later this week. Whooo-hoooo!

Live Camera From Salt Lake City Now Featured on EARTH FOR EVERYONE!

One of the nice things about living on a hillside is the incredible view. It's especially beautiful here in Utah. That's why I've put up a live webcam from my studios to show the world what I get to look at every day. The box in the left margin is what I see when I look out from my studio on what's known as the East Bench of the Wasatch Front: basically, the foothills of the Wasatch Mountain range. For you ski and outdoors buffs, it's an instant indicator of what the weather conditions are like.
You're looking at the horizon ranging from the southwest toward West Jordan and the Oquirrh Mountains, west down at I-80, I-15 and beyond all the way to the Great Salt Lake, and northwest toward the skyline of downtown Salt Lake City, the state capitol building, the airport, and directly behind the skyline, the mountains of Antelope Island which is right in the lake.
Because we're 700 feet above the valley floor, it'll get socked in by clouds up here when a storm moves in. That's when you'll see more closeup shots like snow, rain, and the many bird feeders that attact flickers, woodpeckers, magpies, finches, scrub and Stellar's jays and all sorts of other great winged creatures who live right here.
If you'd like to see a bigger view of the camera, go to my company website by clicking here or on the camera box itself! Enjoy and let me know what you think.

Utah Towns Named Outdoor Life Magazine's Friendliest

The folks in Utah are generally friendly anyway. But if you're coming from somewhere else to enjoy all our state has to offer in the world of outdoor recreation, expect the red carpet. Or at least a maroon sleeping bag. Outdoor Life Magazine has named five Utah towns as among the friendliest for outdoors lovers. But you can expect royal treatment just about anywhere here.

Utah's Incredible Winter Continues

It's less than a month until spring and the snow is still falling like it's December. I've had to shovel more this winter than I have since I lived in Minnesota. But I can't say I'm tired of it. In fact, this has been one of the most exciting, fun and inspiring winters I can remember. I won't bore you with a lot of details of how much snow we've gotten but it should be near the record levels of just two and three years ago respectively. The skiing's been unbelievably good and consistent from Alta to Canyons, though there have been a lot of avalanches and accidents due to ill-advised skiing, snowmobiling and other indiscretions.

But this is why I live in Utah. It's hands down the most beautiful state I've lived in- eight in all. And winter is what makes Utah more fun to be in than most states who suffer from lack of adequate winter recreational facilities. Not so here. Skiing, skating, sledding, backcountry, snowmobiling, kiting, snowshoeing- you name, we do it. And if you've never been here, now's the time to come. The holiday crowds are gone until spring break and the snow's still coming. Don't waste your time with Florida.
